Animal Refuge Furness have been operational as a Charity in the Barrow-in-Furness area for over 30 years. Previous to 1994 we were known as Animal Rescue Furness. We are a registered charity working throughout the Barrow area to find new homes for stray and abandoned animals.
Animal Refuge support the dogs in Barrow Borough Pound. These are the dogs taken into the pound by the local Council
The council have to keep these dogs for seven days, after that, any dogs which that have not been claimed by their owners can be legally destroyed. To prevent this happening, after the seven days, Animal Refuge take over all expenses for these dogs.
The kenneling and veterinary fees alone amount to tens of thousands of pounds each year. This money must be raised by the charity and we do this by selling second hand or donated goods in the charity shop. We also take adoption fees for the animals we re-home, accept cash donations and operate fund raising events.
Lots of the councils in Britain destroy the dogs after seven days. The dogs in the Barrow Pound are safe because of the work we do and the funds we work tirelessly to raise.
